READING TIKTOK TOO NARROWLY

Most brands ask direct ROAS to tell the whole story.

Direct ROAS matters. But TikTok can create a sale in more than one place. Sometimes the customer buys directly through TikTok or the site. Other times TikTok creates enough recognition that the customer comes back through Google or another channel later.

The channel has to be judged against the role it is actually playing in that brand.

THE COST OF READING IT WRONG

If TikTok is judged only by the sale it claims itself, good spend can get cut because another channel closed the customer.

The reverse matters too. Weak TikTok spend should not be protected by calling it awareness when nothing else changes.

We look for evidence that TikTok is adding demand. Direct sales can be part of that evidence. So can what happens to the rest of the acquisition system when TikTok scales or disappears.

The principle

TikTok starts with discovery.

People come to TikTok to be entertained, not because they have already decided what to buy. The opportunity is to create recognition before the customer was looking for the brand.

Sometimes that demand converts inside TikTok. Sometimes it shows up somewhere else later. Either way, discovery is where the channel starts.

The system

Three principles run through it.

01
Attention has to be earned.People are not on TikTok because they decided to shop. The channel earns attention before intent is fully formed. Sometimes that ends in a sale on TikTok. Sometimes the demand shows up somewhere else later.
02
The content has to belong on TikTok.If it feels like an ad imported from another platform, it usually dies in the feed. Native creative is the starting point, not something added after the idea is finished.
03
Creators give the brand a more credible way in.Creator-led content can make the product feel like part of the feed before the brand has earned that familiarity itself.
Where the TikTok System comes from

The Spine gives the content something worth saying. Method Intelligence keeps what the channel learns, so a winning idea can influence what gets made next.

When TikTok creates recognition, the rest of the Method can use it. When Shop is active, TikTok can also turn some of that attention into revenue without sending the customer somewhere else first.

In operation

Discovery can turn into revenue in more than one place.

Native content can turn into a sale immediately. When it doesn’t, the recognition keeps working after the customer leaves TikTok.

HOW DISCOVERY MOVESJudged across the funnel
01
Discovery
Creator-led content earns attention and introduces the brand before the customer was actively looking for it.
02
Conversion
Some customers buy while the interest is fresh, especially when TikTok Shop removes the need to leave the platform.
03
Later
Others leave with the brand in mind and return when they are ready. TikTok’s contribution can show up somewhere else in the system.
The customer surface · Content

The best TikTok creative feels like something worth watching before it feels like advertising. That gives the product a way into the customer’s attention that a traditional ad often does not.

The brand earns recognition by belonging in the feed.

The team surface · Volume

TikTok burns through creative quickly, so the system needs a steady supply of new material. Winning ideas keep moving while tired ones are replaced before the channel slows down.

Creative supply sets the ceiling on how far TikTok can scale.

The test

Three questions.

Start with how TikTok is being judged.

01Is direct TikTok revenue being read alongside what happens to the wider acquisition system when spend changes?
02Is the creative being made for TikTok, or adapted from somewhere else?
03Can the brand keep enough fresh creative coming to support the amount it wants to spend?

If the channel is being judged from one number or fed with borrowed creative, it is hard to know what TikTok can actually do.

What recognition changes

Recognition changes the starting point of the next interaction. The customer has already seen the brand before they are asked to choose it.

Sometimes that recognition converts directly on TikTok. When it does not, its value can still show up in how the rest of the acquisition system performs.

The TikTok System
Discovery is where TikTok starts. How far it carries the customer depends on the brand, the product and the way people choose to buy.
